El Único Enfrentamiento Oficial
August 7, 2025 marks the only date in the cronología de Xelajú MC contra Club Deportivo Águila. The match took place at Estadio Cementos Progreso in Guatemala City during the second round of group stage play.
Xelajú dominated from start to finish, winning 3-0 in front of 2,748 spectators. More than 2,000 supporters traveled from Quetzaltenango to back their team, creating a hostile atmosphere for the visiting Salvadorans.
The venue itself was notable. CONCACAF had rejected Xelajú’s home stadium, Mario Camposeco, forcing the club to play in the capital instead of their traditional Quetzaltenango base.
Tres Goles Sin Respuesta
Jorge Aparicio opened scoring in the 25th minute with a powerful strike from distance. The captain’s right-footed shot gave Xelajú control heading into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes into the second half, Jesús López extended the advantage. The midfielder headed home a cross from Brazilian forward Romario to make it 2-0 at the 47th minute.
Paraguayan striker Pedro Báez capped the performance in stoppage time. His goal at 90+2, assisted by Widvin Tebalán, completed the 3-0 scoreline and secured all three points for coach Amarini Villatoro’s side.
Águila goalkeeper Jairo Guardado faced constant pressure but couldn’t prevent the damage. Manager Daniel Messina’s tactics failed to contain Xelajú’s attack throughout the 90 minutes.
Diferentes Destinos en el Torneo
The resultado had major implications for both clubs in Grupo D.
Xelajú entered the match with three points from beating CD Hércules 2-0 in their opener. The victory over Águila put them on six points and in strong position to advance. They would go on to finish second in the group with nine points from four matches, qualifying for the knockout rounds.
Águila came in having received a bye in the opening round, making this their tournament debut. The loss left them scrambling for points. They managed just four points total (one win, one draw, two losses) and were eliminated in the group stage.
The contrasting tournament runs highlighted the gap between the two teams that night. Xelajú rode their momentum all the way to the final, where they lost to LD Alajuelense but claimed the runner-up spot. Águila flew home after the group stage ended.
Olimpia topped Grupo D with 10 points. Real Estelí (3 points) and winless Hércules (0 points) rounded out the group.
Por Qué Nunca Se Habían Enfrentado Antes
Geography and league structure explain the lack of previous meetings. Xelajú competes in Guatemala’s Liga Nacional while Águila plays in El Salvador’s Primera División. The clubs rarely qualify for the same regional tournaments.
In the 2024 Copa Centroamericana, Águila participated and reached the quarterfinals before losing to Real Estelí. Xelajú didn’t compete that year, missing their chance at a first meeting.
The 2025 edition brought them together for the first time. Both clubs earned their spots through strong domestic performances but faced each other just once due to the tournament’s single round-robin group format.
Future encounters depend on both qualifying for CONCACAF competitions again. With only the top finishers from each country earning spots, regular meetings remain unlikely.
